In the story, Hermoine Granger receives a Time-turner from the Ministry of Magic to help her follow her lessons in the most streamlined. Hermoine uses the Time-turner to do many things in a single day so that she can take part in all her lessons and extracurricular activities including her duties on freeing the house elves and fighting Voldemort.

The Time-turner works by turning around the hourglass so that the sand flows backward. In this way, the item owner can go back in time in a few hours. However, the Time-turner usage is strictly regulated by the Ministry of Magic, as it can have catastrophic effects on the timeline if it's used in the wrong way.
